Planning to Take the JLPT This December? Applications Open August 24

The December 2026 JLPT will be held on Sunday, December 6. Applications in Japan open on Monday, August 24.

When should you apply?
As early as possible.
Applications are open from August 24 to September 7, 2026, until 5:00 p.m. However, JEES, which administers the JLPT in Japan, warns that applications may close early due to limited test-site capacity.
If you have decided to take the December JLPT, we recommend applying soon after registration opens.

What does the JLPT measure?
The JLPT evaluates Japanese proficiency at five levels, from N5 to N1.
It measures Language Knowledge, including vocabulary and grammar, together with Reading and Listening. It does not directly test Speaking or Writing.

What JLPT level do you need to work in Japan?
There is no single JLPT level required to work in Japan.
The Japanese proficiency you need depends on your profession, position, employer, and how much Japanese communication your job involves.
IT engineers are a good example. Japan Dev, a tech job platform, lists positions requiring no Japanese as well as positions requiring conversational, business-level, or fluent Japanese.
An engineer working mainly in English may not need advanced Japanese. But as a role involves more communication with Japanese colleagues or clients, project management, or people management, stronger Japanese skills can expand your career options.

Can JLPT N2 or N1 help with Japan's Highly Skilled Professional points system?
Yes.
Under Japan's Highly Skilled Professional points system, JLPT N2 can earn 10 additional points, while N1 can earn 15.
Depending on your circumstances, these points can contribute toward qualifying for immigration benefits under the system.
For professionals planning a long-term career in Japan, JLPT certification can therefore have practical value beyond language learning.

Can JLPT study help you speak Japanese?
Yes, but JLPT preparation alone is not enough to develop speaking fluency.
The JLPT does not directly measure Speaking, so passing N2 or N1 does not automatically mean you can speak Japanese fluently.
However, conversation requires more than speaking. Before responding, you need to understand what the other person is saying accurately and quickly. Listening is therefore essential to conversation, and it is directly assessed by the JLPT.
Vocabulary and grammar are important too. When listening, we access language knowledge stored in long-term memory to understand meaning. When speaking, we access the same knowledge to select words and construct sentences.
The Listening and Language Knowledge assessed by the JLPT therefore form part of the foundation for real-world communication.
Speaking requires additional practice, but JLPT study can strengthen some of the knowledge and receptive skills that support communication.

How should you prepare for the JLPT?
Start by understanding your current level and identifying your bottleneck.
Try the official JLPT sample questions and look separately at your performance in Language Knowledge, Reading, and Listening.
If vocabulary and grammar are strong but Reading or Listening is weak, focus more study time on the weaker skill.
If vocabulary and grammar are weak, strengthen your Language Knowledge first because it provides a foundation for Reading and Listening.

Then build a realistic study plan based on the time and effort you can invest.
The goal is not simply to study more. It is to focus your resources on what you need most.
