Ebara Hatakeyama Museum of Art 2026 Summer Exhibition II
Two exhibitions held simultaneously ◆ [Main Building 2nd Floor] "Hatakeyama Collection Exhibition" Stories Surrounding Tea Utensils and Labels ◆【New Building 2nd Floor / New Building Basement 1】 《Kaoru Ueda Exhibition》 In Memory of Kaoru Ueda's Super-Realism — Jam, Ice Cream, Raw Egg ◇ Stories Surrounding Tea Utensils and Names Exquisite tea utensils carefully preserved and passed down over many years. Tea masters bestowed 'mei' (inscriptions) on these tools out of respect and affection for their unique utensils. "Mei" is an alternative name given to an excellent tea utensil. The names inscribed on the utensils and storage boxes serve as a bridge to the present day to convey the feelings and aesthetic sensibilities of those who loved tea utensils. This exhibition focuses on the theme of "Why was this name given?" and unravels the stories hidden within the tea utensils. Please enjoy it along with the many cool creations. We hope this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to enjoy and view tea ceremony utensils. [Main Building & Special Exhibition] We will be exhibiting the Important Cultural Property 'Toyotomi Hideyoshi Portrait Legend, Painted by Kano Sangaku, Inscribed by Konoe Nobutada.' This work is known as one of the representative portraits of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. With the ongoing Taiga drama growing interest in the Sengoku period, please take this opportunity to watch it. ◇ One Year of Memorial: Kaoru Ueda's Super Realism—Jam, Ice Cream, Raw Egg ~A vivid relay of 'Ultimate Abstraction' and 'Ultimate Realism'~ As a summer series, we will hold exhibitions in Phase I and Phase II that present two opposing modes of expression. Through the theme of "From Abstraction to Realism," we will introduce the richness of contemporary art expression. In the second phase, we will hold an exhibition commemorating one year after the passing of Kaoru Ueda, a leading contemporary Japanese Western-style painter. Kaoru Ueda projected photographs onto canvas and vividly depicted moments that are intangible to the naked eye, such as the moment a raw egg falls or the ice cream scooped up with a spoon. This expression later came to be called 'super-realism,' and Kaoru Ueda became known as one of its representative artists. The fresh colors overflowing from the canvas bring a sense of surprise and excitement, making viewers feel "more beautiful than the real thing." This exhibition features over 60 pieces, ranging from early works to representative pieces, and from his later years when he broke away from realism to explore new frontiers. Additionally, we will specially showcase Mrs. Yoko's warm quilt pieces, which have supported him continuously. We hope you will enjoy a space in the new building, designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto, where the ultimate skills and the trajectory of life resonate. To spend a "once-in-a-lifetime time" that embodies the spirit of the main building's tea ceremony, please come to the tranquil forest of Shirokanedai. [Biography] Kaoru Ueda He was born in Yoyogi, Tokyo Prefecture in 1928 (Showa 3). Inspired by his encounter with art historian Soichi Tominaga, he aspired to become a painter and entered the Oil Painting Department at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1954 (Showa 29), he graduated from the university. In 1958 (Showa 33), he held his first solo exhibition at Minami Gallery. Meanwhile, in 1956 (Showa 31), he won the International Grand Prize at the MGM Poster International Competition and was also active as a graphic designer. After that, he devoted about ten years to work in the field of design. Around 1968, he resumed painting production. Using the technique of projecting photographs onto canvas, he gained attention for his representative works such as 'Nama Tamago'. His new realistic expression was highly praised as resonating with the super-realism of the same era. He has served as a professor at Ibaraki University and Yamano College of Beauty and Arts. He passed away on September 26, 2025 (Reiwa 7). He was 96 years old. Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum Exhibition: "Weaving Love, Carving Prayer—Lithuanian Handicrafts—"
At the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, the exhibition "Weaving Love, Engraving Prayer—Lithuanian Handicrafts—" will be held from Saturday, January 16 to Sunday, March 28, 2027. Lithuania is one of the so-called Baltic states, sandwiched between Scandinavia and Russia, and the beautiful old town of the capital, Vilnius, was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1994. Lithuanian handicrafts, along with language, folklore, and songs, have been cherished and nurtured as expressions that preserve Lithuania's ancient culture. This exhibition is the first in Japan to fully showcase the diverse handicrafts of Lithuania, with the full cooperation of the National Museum of Lithuania, the National Gallery of Lithuania, and the National M.K. Čurlionis Museum. Items born from people's daily lives—such as boards for spinning thread called 'velpste'—aprons and linens, woodwork like chairs and towel racks, ceramics, and rattan baskets—are all displayed in one place, along with a wide variety of faith-based items like crosses, sacred statues, and prints. Kazuhiro Fujita 'Black Museum Series' Pop-up Store
From Friday, August 14 to Tuesday, September 8, 2026, a pop-up store for the comic 'Black Museum Series' (written by Kazuhiro Fujita / published by Kodansha) will be held at 'magmabooks' in Toranomon, Tokyo. The 'Black Museum Series,' drawn by Kazuhiro Fujita of 'Ushio and Tora' and 'Karakuri Circus' for the seinen magazine 'Morning,' is a fantasy action series set in 19th-century Victorian Britain, weaving together real people and historical events. So far, three series have been published: 'Springard,' 'Ghost and Lady,' and 'Crescent Moon, Dance with the Monster.' Marimekko, Finland's leading design house. Its name means "Marie's Dress." Since its founding in 1951, we have created designs that brighten our lives—from fashion and interiors to tableware and everyday accessories—through vibrant colors and bold patterns. To date, more than 3,500 print designs have been released, widely supported across generations and borders. This exhibition delves into Marimekko's aesthetics and the background behind its creation, through materials that convey rare dresses and fabrics from various eras, as well as the production process. Suntory Museum of Art 'Feast for the Eyes: Tableware'
At the Suntory Museum of Art, the "Feast for the Eyes: Tableware" event will be held from Wednesday, July 8 to Sunday, August 30, 2026. This exhibition features ceramic tableware from the early modern period, mainly from the Momoyama to Edo periods, as part of our core philosophy of enjoying the museum's core philosophy of 'beauty in everyday life.' About 400 years ago, it seems that in Japan, it was established in hospitality settings to seek out and skillfully use and enjoy ceramic tableware of various origins, shapes, patterns, and uses. Elegant large plates, elegant pots, and distinctive serving ....... When you pay attention to the design of such ceramic tableware, you notice that there are quite a few messages of good fortune, a sense of season, or a desire to serve with unusual dishes. Tableware was probably a "feast for the eyes" that brought even deeper joy to guests, combined with delicious food. The ceramic tableware favored by the Japanese was not limited to domestic products but also reached overseas countries such as China, reflecting the strong Japanese interest in tableware. As a place to connect cultures 100 years into the future, the opening of this facility, which aims to create diverse narratives from the experiences of each visitor, will be marked by the special exhibition "The Round and Round Exhibition: The Story of Evolving Humanity". The keyword that symbolizes the activities that MoN Takanawa will create in the future is "round and round". New cultures are born as different fields mix with people, between people, between the past and the future. The movement overlaps in the shape of a spiral that goes round and round. This spiral is the very idea of this facility, which is also reflected in the architecture and logo of MoN Takanawa. The special exhibition "Guruguru Exhibition" to commemorate the opening of the museum is the first exhibition to deliver this idea as an experience. With the theme of "Guruguru", a universal form that has supported the evolution of mankind, we will develop a variety of "Guruguru" (circles, repetitions, and spirals) that abound in the world, such as the cycle of nature, the renewal of cities, and the circulation of human bodies and thoughts. POLA Cultural Research Institute 50th Anniversary Project "I'm Away" First Semester "Looking in the Mirror"
The 50th anniversary project "Yosoo Me" will be held at the Makeup Culture Gallery. This exhibition will be divided into the first and second halves, focusing on "mirrors" and "scents", respectively. In the early period, "Looking at the Mirror", Etruscan bronze hand mirrors (circa 4th century BC), elegant Art Nouveau-style female statue mirrors (circa 1900), and mirror boxes and mirror hangings with delicately shining Riji maki-e (late Edo period) are exhibited. Mori Art Museum "Ron Mueck"

Ron Muek (b. 1958, Australia, UK) is a contemporary artist who has pushed the boundaries of figurative sculpture using innovative materials, techniques, and methods of expression. Created with close observation of human beings and philosophical contemplation, Mueck's works are sophisticated and full of life, skillfully expressing the inner emotions and experiences of human beings, such as loneliness, fragility and weakness, anxiety, and resilience. Since then, he has held solo exhibitions around the world since his participation in the exhibition "Sensation: Young British Artists in the Saatchi Collection" (1997) at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The sculpture, which is made much larger or even smaller than the actual person, is also a challenge to our preconceived notions. At the same time, while it is close to the reality that it seems to actually exist, it also leaves an ambiguity that encourages each viewer's interpretation and reflection. It exudes a mysterious yet overwhelming presence, questioning our relationship with our bodies and with our very existence. This exhibition is planned based on the artist's long-standing relationship with the Fondation Cartier Contemporain, and will be held at the Mori Art Museum in 2023, starting at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, passing through Milan and Seoul. This is my second solo exhibition in Japan since the retrospective exhibition was held at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in 2008. Focusing on the artist's major works, such as the large-scale work "Mas" (2016–2017), 11 works from his early masterpieces to his recent works will be exhibited, providing a deep insight into the development trajectory of his works. Six of these works will be exhibited for the first time in Japan, and it will be a unique opportunity to exhibit his early masterpiece Angel (1997). The exhibition will also feature valuable photographic and video works by French photographer and filmmaker Gautier Dublonde documenting the artist's studio and production process, revealing how Mueck's incomparable sculptures are created.

The venue, which was created with free ideas, from the use of colors, wallpaper, decorations, and patterns, is full of colorfulness and fun, just like the clothes and accessories designed by Paul Smith. Approximately 80 works, including Portrait of a Man, which represents Picasso's early years, to Paul in the Dress of Arlecan, will be exhibited in a loose chronological order. This exhibition is part of the special exhibition "Picasso Celebration: The Collection In a New Light!" held in Paris in 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Picasso's death.
