◇ Stories Surrounding Tea Utensils and Names
Exquisite tea utensils carefully preserved and passed down over many years. Tea masters bestowed 'mei' (inscriptions) on these tools out of respect and affection for their unique utensils. "Mei" is an alternative name given to an excellent tea utensil. The names inscribed on the utensils and storage boxes serve as a bridge to the present day to convey the feelings and aesthetic sensibilities of those who loved tea utensils.
This exhibition focuses on the theme of "Why was this name given?" and unravels the stories hidden within the tea utensils. Please enjoy it along with the many cool creations. We hope this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to enjoy and view tea ceremony utensils.
[Main Building & Special Exhibition]
We will be exhibiting the Important Cultural Property 'Toyotomi Hideyoshi Portrait Legend, Painted by Kano Sangaku, Inscribed by Konoe Nobutada.' This work is known as one of the representative portraits of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. With the ongoing Taiga drama growing interest in the Sengoku period, please take this opportunity to watch it.

◇ One Year of Memorial: Kaoru Ueda's Super Realism—Jam, Ice Cream, Raw Egg
~A vivid relay of 'Ultimate Abstraction' and 'Ultimate Realism'~
As a summer series, we will hold exhibitions in Phase I and Phase II that present two opposing modes of expression. Through the theme of "From Abstraction to Realism," we will introduce the richness of contemporary art expression. In the second phase, we will hold an exhibition commemorating one year after the passing of Kaoru Ueda, a leading contemporary Japanese Western-style painter. Kaoru Ueda projected photographs onto canvas and vividly depicted moments that are intangible to the naked eye, such as the moment a raw egg falls or the ice cream scooped up with a spoon. This expression later came to be called 'super-realism,' and Kaoru Ueda became known as one of its representative artists. The fresh colors overflowing from the canvas bring a sense of surprise and excitement, making viewers feel "more beautiful than the real thing."
This exhibition features over 60 pieces, ranging from early works to representative pieces, and from his later years when he broke away from realism to explore new frontiers. Additionally, we will specially showcase Mrs. Yoko's warm quilt pieces, which have supported him continuously. We hope you will enjoy a space in the new building, designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto, where the ultimate skills and the trajectory of life resonate. To spend a "once-in-a-lifetime time" that embodies the spirit of the main building's tea ceremony, please come to the tranquil forest of Shirokanedai.
[Biography] Kaoru Ueda
He was born in Yoyogi, Tokyo Prefecture in 1928 (Showa 3). Inspired by his encounter with art historian Soichi Tominaga, he aspired to become a painter and entered the Oil Painting Department at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1954 (Showa 29), he graduated from the university. In 1958 (Showa 33), he held his first solo exhibition at Minami Gallery. Meanwhile, in 1956 (Showa 31), he won the International Grand Prize at the MGM Poster International Competition and was also active as a graphic designer. After that, he devoted about ten years to work in the field of design. Around 1968, he resumed painting production. Using the technique of projecting photographs onto canvas, he gained attention for his representative works such as 'Nama Tamago'. His new realistic expression was highly praised as resonating with the super-realism of the same era. He has served as a professor at Ibaraki University and Yamano College of Beauty and Arts. He passed away on September 26, 2025 (Reiwa 7). He was 96 years old.
