Okura Shukokukan Special Exhibition: "The Beauty of Prayer and Salvation — Encounter with the National Treasure Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Riding an Elephant"
Kihachiro Okura (1837~1928), a great businessman who engaged in various modern ventures, was concerned about the destruction of temples caused by the anti-Buddhist eradication, the loss and overseas loss of Buddhist artworks, and worked to collect and protect antiques from Japan and the East, including those items. Then, in 1917, he established the private museum Okura Shukokan and publicly recognized his value by exhibiting his works. This exhibition organizes Buddhist artworks, one of the pillars of our collection, into six chapters: 'Scriptures and the Transmission of Buddhism,' 'Shakyamuni Buddha and His Disciples,' 'Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and Hell,' 'Faith in the Lotus Sutra and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva,' 'Esoteric Buddhism,' and 'Syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism.' At the same time, the flow of Buddhist art is introduced. At the same time, it is one of only two National Treasure Buddhist statues in Tokyo, including the bronze statue of Shakyamuni Kanyorai Rairai (owned by Jindai-ji), the 'Samantabhadra Statue Riding an Elephant.' " will also be exhibited. Please enjoy the delicate and elegant form of this statue, representing the late Heian period, along with its splendid coloring and meticulous cut-and-metal fittings.
