TOKYO NODE "Tony Ausler: The Gap between Technology and Gnostic ~Magic, Media, and Art~"
From July 3 (Friday) to September 27 (Sunday), 2026, Japan's first large-scale solo exhibition "Tony Ausler: The Gap between Technology and Psychic ~Magic, Media, Art~" by Tony Ausler (1957-), one of America's leading pioneers of multimedia art, will be held at TOKYO NODE, an information dissemination base in Otomon Hills.
Tony Ausler (born 1957) is an artist known for his mysterious immersive installations that combine video, sculpture, sound, light, and words. He pioneered a style of expression that projects images onto three-dimensional objects such as video installations and projection mapping, and has continued to sharply question the complex relationship between image and story, technology and human psychology, belief systems (beliefs), and society.
The world of Ausler's work spans a wide range of fields, from pop culture and subcultures to science, conspiracy theories, religion, paranormal phenomena, and the universe. Through poetic gaze and humor, the film reflects the desire and anxiety of the "invisible" in modern society, such as data flows, surveillance systems, spirits, and signals, and invites the viewer to take a journey of contemplation through the senses.
The exhibition will feature major works such as Private (1994-1997) and Specular (2021), in which contemporary artist Jim Shaw also participated, as well as unpublished works that have been made into works for more than a quarter of a century, as well as the latest site-specific works for this exhibition. In addition, archival materials carefully selected for this exhibition will be exhibited from among his collection of approximately 3,000 materials such as science, magic, and unidentified phenomena, which are also the source of Ausler's creation.
In recent years, the development of AI, surveillance technology, and generative media has significantly changed our perception and belief. At the same time, there is a growing interest in spirituality and unidentified phenomena. In this situation, Ausler's work, which has looked at the "gap between technology and psychism", now poses important questions to us.
This exhibition offers an exciting experience for all interested in witchcraft, media, art, and technology.
